The jury at Manchester Crown Court found Neonatal Nurse Lucy Letby guilty of murdering seven babies and trying to kill six others at the Countess of Chester Hospital between June 2015 and June 2016. At over 10 months, the murder trial was the longest and one of the most complex in British history.

Whole Life Order

Mr Justice Goss sentenced Letby to 14 whole life orders on Monday, August 21, 2023. A whole life order is the most severe sentence available in the UK and means that Letby will never be eligible for parole.

Why did Lucy Letby do it?

The prosecution argued that Letby enjoyed “playing God” and she targeted the most vulnerable babies. Driving her desire to kill was getting the “personal attention” of a male doctor who would respond when the babies she harmed deteriorated. The defence argued that Letby was innocent and that the babies had died of natural causes.

Lucy Letby’s Sentence

The jury rejected the defence’s arguments and found Letby guilty of fourteen of the twenty-two charges against her. Each and every offence that the jury found her guilty of resulted in a whole life order. Mr Justice Goss said that “Because the seriousness of your offences is exceptionally high… you will spend the rest of your life in prison.”

Lucy Letby’s Parents

Letby’s parents, John and Susan Letby, have not spoken publicly about their daughter’s conviction or sentence. However, they attended every day of the trial and Susan Letby sobbed in the courtroom when the jury found her daughter guilty. They did not attend for her sentencing, and Letby herself also refused to appear in court.

The Trial of Lucy Letby

It is not clear why Lucy Letby committed these crimes. The prosecution argued that she got “a thrill out of…the grief and despair.” The defence argued that the prosecution was “founded on guesswork” but the jury rejected this argument.

The whole life orders mean that the prison will never release Lucy Letby. She will die behind bars. Letby maintains her innocence.

Safety of Babies in Hospitals

This case has shocked us, and it raises questions about the safety of babies in hospitals. The Countess of Chester Hospital, rated as requires improvement by the CQC (and inadequate for maternity services) following its inspection in June 2022, has apologised to the families of the victims. The Government has ordered an independent enquiry into the circumstances behind the murders and attempted murders to help ensure that families get the answers that they need.

England vs Spain was the final match of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023. The teams played on Sunday, August 20, 2023, at 20:00 ACT (11:00 BST) at Stadium Australia in Sydney.

Spain won the match, defeating England 1-0. Olga Carmona scored the only goal of the game in the 29th minute.

The final was a close and tense match, with both teams creating chances. England had the better of the first half despite the out-standing goal scored by Carmona that would turn out to be the winner. But Spain came out stronger in the second half and won even after having a penalty sensationally saved by England goalkeeper Earps.

The victory is Spain’s first ever FIFA Women’s World Cup title. They are the ninth team to win the tournament, and they take over from the 2015 and 2019 Champions, the United States.

The win is also a major boost for women’s football in Spain. The Spanish league is one of the strongest in the world, and the national team is now one of the favourites to win future tournaments.

Spain’s victory is a disappointment for England, who were hoping to win the country’s first World Cup title since 1966. However, the lionesses can be proud of their performance in the tournament, and we will be hoping to see them go one step further in the next World Cup.

The Man City vs Sevilla match took place on Wednesday August 16, 2023, for the UEFA Super Cup. Manchester City won the match 5-4 on penalties after the teams tied 1-1. This is Man City’s first UEFA Super Cup title.

We always look forward to the UEFA Super Cup as it is between two of the best teams in Europe. Man City are the defending Champions League, and Premier League and FA Cup, champions, while Sevilla are the defending Europa League champions. The teams played the match in Piraeus, Greece, which is a popular tourist destination.

In addition, young English player Cole Palmer was a standout star. Palmer, who is only 21 years old, scored the equalising goal for Man City in the 63rd minute. We thought that Palmer’s performance was brilliant and are expecting that he will be a regular starter for Man City this season.

Sir Michael Parkinson CBE, the legendary British broadcaster, and interviewer, died on Wednesday, August 16, 2023, at the age of 88. He had been suffering from a brief illness.

Interviews

Parkinson was a national treasure and his interviews with a variety of the biggest names in the world, from Muhammad Ali to Sir Elton John, were legendary. His biggest regrets were never interviewing Frank Sinatra and the way that he managed the infamous Meg Ryan interview. He was a familiar face on British television for decades, hosting his chat show Parkinson for over 20 years.

Billy Connolly

Parkinson was relieved to have repaired his friendship with Billy Connolly. Parkinson unwittingly offended Connolly in 2018 when he said that he was “slowing down.” Connolly has a degenerative neurological disorder, called Parkinson’s disease, which affects movement. The loss of dopamine-producing cells in the brain causes it. The symptoms of the disease vary from person to person, but they often include tremors, muscle rigidity, slowness of movement, and impaired balance.

They fell out over the comment, after being friends for years. Parkinson had given Connolly his big break when he first interviewed him on his show back in 1975. Parkinson was relieved to have been able to make up with Connolly after writing him a letter that said ‘there is no way in this world I would hurt you, or deliberately demean you’. Connolly replied by writing back ‘let’s go back to how we were, old friends’.

Prostate Cancer

Parkinson suffered from prostate cancer in the past. He underwent radiotherapy treatment for the cancer in 2013, and in 2015 doctors gave him the all-clear.

England won their semi-final match against Australia 3-1 in the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 on Wednesday, August 16. They will now play Spain in the final on Sunday, August 20. This is the first time that England has reached the final of the Women’s World Cup.

The match against Australia was a close one, with England taking the lead in the first half through Ella Toone. Australia equalised in the second half through Sam Kerr, but England scored two more goals through Lauren Hemp and Alessia Russo to secure the win.

England will play Spain in the final at 11am BST on Sunday, August 20, at Stadium Australia in Sydney. BBC One and ITV will broadcast the match live.

Man City win opening Premier League match 3-0 against Burnley, with Erling Haaland scoring twice

Man City won their opening Premier League match of the season against Burnley 3-0 on Friday 11 August 2023. See the highlights below. This was their first match since losing to Arsenal in the FA Community Shield the weekend prior (Sunday 6 August 2023). Man City won the Premier League title for the third time in a row last season, and their match against Burnley was a convincing victory against a newly promoted side. Erling Haaland scored twice in the match, and he is quickly becoming our favourite at City.

Man City facing points deduction over alleged financial fair play breaches

Second, Man City are facing a potential points deduction from the Premier League due to alleged breaches of financial fair play rules. This comes off the back of a four-year investigation by the Premier League. The Premier League has charged City with breaking the rules around 100 times over a nine-year period from 2009-2018. During this time City won the FA Cup once (2011), the FA Community Shield twice (2012 and 2018), the Football League Cup three times (2014, 2016 and 2018) and the Premier League three times (2012, 2014 and 2018).  If the Independent Commission (IC) find City guilty, they IC could deduct a substantial number of points from City, which could have a major impact on their title hopes.

Man City linked with Lucas Paqueta and Jeremy Doku

Finally, Man City are pursuing high-profile transfer targets, including Lucas Paqueta and Jeremy Doku. These transfers would be expensive, at an expected £80m and £45m respectively, but they would help City to strengthen their squad and challenge for more trophies in the coming seasons.

The Man United vs Wolves match that took place yesterday, 14 August 2023, was controversial. Manchester United won the match 1-0, however there were missed opportunities for Wolves and a potential penalty that was not given.

The goalkeeper for Man United, Andre Onana, was at the centre of the controversy. During stoppage time, he appeared to foul Wolves player Sasa Kalajdzic in the penalty area. However, the referee, Simon Hooper, and the VAR both decided that it was not a foul (they have since been dropped from this weekend’s upcoming Premier League fixtures).

Gary O’Neil, a former West Ham player, was critical of the decision. He said afterwards that “It looked like the keeper almost took our strikers head off. It looks the same now. I think it is a foul.” and ” I’ve spoken to Jon Moss and fair play to him, he apologised, said it was a blatant penalty and that it should have been given”. Jon Moss is the Select Group 1 Manager at the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL).

The controversy overshadowed Mason Mount’s disastrous Premier League debut, having transferred in from Chelsea for £60millon in July 2023. He was eventually replaced by Christian Eriksen 68 minutes into the game.

Anthony Joshua fought Robert Helenius at the O2 Arena in London on Saturday, August 12, 2023. The fight started at around 23.30 BST.

Anthony Joshua OBE, 33, is a British professional boxer who is a former two-time unified world heavyweight champion. Joshua is one of the best heavyweight boxers in the world. Robert Helenius, 39, is a Finnish professional boxer who is a former two-time European heavyweight champion. He is a known puncher with a strong chin. Helenius stepped into the fight with a week’s notice. Joshua was originally supposed to fight Dillian Whyte but that was cancelled last week after Whyte failed a voluntary drugs test.

Joshua won the fight by knockout in the seventh round.

This was his first fight since beating Jermaine Franklin in April. Joshua’s next fight is against Deontay Wilder, which is expected to take place in January 2024.

England are through to the semis in the Women’s World Cup 2023.

The Lionesses win over Colombia in the quarterfinals.

England beat Colombia 2-1 on Saturday 12^th August, thanks to goals from Alessia Russo and Lauren Hemp. This will be England’s third consecutive semi-final appearance at the Women’s World Cup, and they will face co-hosts Australia in the next round.

Russo has been one of the stars of the tournament for England, scoring two goals in five games. She scored the winning goal that sent England into the semi-finals.

The England women’s team are getting better and better, following their success at the 2019 World Cup, when they came fourth, and the 2022 European Championship, which they won. The team is one of the favourites to win the 2023 World Cup.

Of all of the matches of the tournament so far, the semi-final match between England and Australia on Wednesday 16^th August is one of my most anticipated matches. Both teams are strong favourites to win the World Cup, and the match is sure to be a close contest.

Hemp has also been one of England’s standout players at the tournament. The 23-year-old winger has also scored two goals in five games, one of the goals scored in the quarter-final against Columbia. She is one of the most exciting young players in the world, and she is sure to be a key player for England in the semi-finals and, if they win on Wednesday, the final.
